Dr. Sterling has called Polk County home for almost 60 years. He graduated from Auburndale Senior High School before earning his Associate's of Arts degree from Polk Community College in Winter Haven. He went on to earn his Bachelor's of Science degree from the University of Central Florida in Orlando, his Doctor of Optometry from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee, and his Master's of Art's degree from Louisiana Technological University in Ruston, Louisiana. He served 3 years as an optometrist in the United State's Air Force before returning home to Polk County. Dr. Sterling has cared for the eyes of people in Polk County since 1978 and has owned his own optometry practice on Havendale Boulevard since 1985. He is a member of the following professional organizations: the Florida Optometric Association, the American Optometric Association, and the Lake Region Optometric Society. He loves what he does and has a dedicated office staff to help him meet the needs of his patients; therefore, he has no plans to retire any time soon.
Dr. Sterling is a fixture of the Auburndale community. Giving back to the community is his chief hobby. He has been an active member of the Auburndale Rotary Club and the Auburndale Chamber of Commerce since 1980. He was a founding member of both the Auburndale Main Street Redevelopment Association and the Auburndale Community Redevelopment Association (CRA). He has served as an advisory board member for the Mid Florida Home Health Services, Inc. and the Citizen's Bank Advisory Board. Currently, he is a City Commissioner in Auburndale and has 14 years of prior elected experience on the City Commission including 2 years as the Mayor of Auburndale. He was elected to the Auburndale High School Hall of Fame in 2007. He is a member of Gideon's International and the Polk County Central Gideon Camp. He is a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Auburndale where he and his wife play handbells. He is a loving husband to his wife, Jo, a devoted dad to his daughter, Emily, and a great friend. In his spare time, Dr. Sterling enjoys gardening, traveling, talking to people, and drinking sweet tea.
